No fa massa vaig publicar sobre el dispositiu anterior – una bombeta de vidre d'aspecte fresc que suposadament utilitza la llum per espantar els vols. Aquesta afirmació va colpejar el meu nervi escèptics, and I discussed itin my previous post. Durant les últimes setmanes he estat investigant mètodes raonables per posar a prova aquesta afirmació – and like much of my research – I procrastinate and end up watching TV. But every once in a while it pays off; and to my amazement I stumbled upon theMythbusters and their Bug Special (Season 8, episode 26). One of their mini-myths was exactly this – that bags of water can scare away flies! The test was designed pretty well, however the concept as to why it would have worked is flawed. As I discussed in my previous post, flies would and should be able to handle refracted and reflected light. El “invisible wall” theory did not hold up as you can imagine and the bag of water did zero to repel flies – and it might have actually attracted a few who were looking for a droplet or two of moisture around the edges. I am still left wondering if the motion of scattered light would have any effect on fly behavior (however unlikely). Looks like I missed my opportunity for a Mythbusters consult!
Àlex Wild publicat fa uns dies sobre la “freelensing” tècnica de fotografia. Podeu obtenir resultats molt interessants, sobretot amb la creació de la il·lusió de miniatures – però fins ara no he estat prou valent per donar-hi una oportunitat (cap joc de paraules). Avui m'he trobat amb aquesta impressionant recopilació d'imatges haitianes a NPR que és tant tilt-shift com stop-motion!

It’s always something. I updated my theme the other day and a glitch in the software caused a crash. Everything was put back together by the Southern Fried Scientist, but now I need to pick up the pieces and find a new theme to host my page. Estigueu atents, I need to rebuild, and it will probably take me a day or two to get everything back to working order!
Benvinguts al nou any, i gairebé un any sencer de blocs! És increïble com de ràpid ha passat volant el temps, però de nou sempre ho fa. Com probablement heu notat, desembre va resultar ser el meu mes de publicació més feble amb una gran quantitat 2 publicacions. Resolució: més publicació!
Ara no he començat a escriure un blog sobre música (per als que aconsegueixen el Referència Wilco), però ens porto de nou a l'arna fantasma de publicacions anteriors.
Què tal $2,000? O potser vostè coneix a un estudiant universitari que necessita aquest? BioQuip ofereix una beca anual per “encoratjar [de llicenciatura] interès dels estudiants en entomologia”, però endevinar quantes persones van sol · licitar l'any passat? 3. I el trist és que en realitat és alta, Estic bastant segur que el premi ha anat sense reclamar en anys anteriors. The word needs to get out, so I will do my part. It would be great to see more professors, grad students and enthusiastic undergrads asking BioQuip about their stash of free money! Goaquí i aquíto see how you can apply. Spread the word.
Jo sé el que estic esperant de santa d'aquest any!
Bé, en realitat no. En realitat jo no col · lecciono papallones, i sobretot no estàs Birdwings gegants. Són animals impressionants, però a part de ser enorme, també són cars (els exemplars mitjana van per prop d'un centenar de dòlars). La part digna de notícia d'aquesta història és quant va costar a la subhasta. Abans de dir-te el preu… aquesta és una rara aberració d'una papallona rara (l'ala anterior és gairebé un rubor verd sòlid, que és estrany). Però…encara és només una papallona.
Aquestes són algunes captures de pantalla d'un dels meus podcasts favorits, L'arna! Per a aquells que no són conscients, vostè ha de comprovar que funciona – i es va sorprendre que no és en realitat l'entomologia relacionada. Històries reals van dir viu a l'escenari, que van des hilarant punyent. PERÒ, que han fet la seva aparició en el meu GOP – qui em pot dir per què?
Mentre que es preparen per a més llocs de substància, gaudir d'aquest breu vídeo de la col·lecció de la papallona de l'Acadèmia de Ciències de Califòrnia. dr. Norma Penny fa una feina meravellosa de compartir algunes de les nostres joies, és una llàstima que el vídeo no és per més temps (o al voltant d'arnes!).
Fes un cop d'ull a aquest tràiler de la pel·lícula “Es Crema el Cel” – “The Sky is Burning”. Un documental sobre la rehabilitació dels boscos tropicals Guancaste al nord-oest de Costa Rica. Sembla una pel·lícula bella…Ara només he de trobar una còpia.
