Una història trista només ha fet el seu camí des de Belize – la Santuari d'educació dels cocodrils americans té cremat fins a terra. A primera vista això no era més que un informe lamentable d'un centre d'investigació i conservació que s'havia perdut en un tràgic incendi. Que, però, no és la història completa. Resulta que una multitud d'indígenes maies es va enfuriar i va incendiar les instal·lacions.. Per què? Perquè un psíquic els va dir als propietaris havia assassinat nens i els va donar de menjar als seus cocodrils!
Era com una cosa d'una pel·lícula de Frankenstein,” Cherie Rose va dir dimarts. “Si haguéssim estat a casa, ens haurien matat. Van dir que ens anaven a trossejar i donar-nos de menjar als cocodrils.”
La policia nacional confirma que els vilatans indígenes maies actuaven seguint el consell d'un psíquic que va dir que les Roses tenien alguna cosa a veure amb l'agost. 7 desaparició de Benjamin Rash, de 9 anys, i de la seva germana Onelia, d'11 anys..
La pregunta sorgeix sovint – “quin mal és realment?” – pel que fa a aquest tipus de cortesia anticientífica. La major part del temps, realment no hi ha cap dany, excepte a la butxaca. Però, de tant en tant, alguna cosa tràgica passa i tot s'hauria pogut evitar fins i tot amb el més mínim pensament racional o discreció. El psíquic de la ciutat va ser molt més temerari en culpar aquests gringos – i hauria de patir les conseqüències de les seves accions. Va culpar deliberadament dues persones innocents per la mort dels nens locals, que ràpidament va provocar una greu pèrdua de béns personals. Per sort, Cherie i Vince Rose estaven fora en aquell moment rescatant un cocodril – potser no han escapat de la turba enfadada si haguessin estat a casa. Els exemples d'això sempre em posen trist, però reactiva la meva passió per desmentir aquests lladres i criminals.

Per Chris Grinter, on September 6th, 2010 For regular readers of my blog you might already know my stance on the monarch, però catch up here if you’d like to. Yesterday I came across this article in the LA times – regarding the overwintering colonies of monarchs in Pacific Grove, Califòrnia. Out here, west of the continental divide, there are quite a few monarchs that migrate to coastal California and Baja del Norte instead of traveling into central Mexico. Not all monarchs from California stay in the state, but there are dozens hundreds of known roosting sites (.pdf) up and down our pacific coast.
Pacific Grove has one of the best known localities and has built the local economy around their seasonal migrants (yet no one is deporting these Mexicans). En breu, the town government hired an arborist to cut back dangerous eucalyptus growth. Why was that necessary? allà per 2004 a limb from a diseased native-pine had fallen and killed an 85-year-old woman while on a walk with her grandchildren. In wake of the million dollar settlement paid to the family of the deceased the town decided to preemptively cut back old tree growth. But now everyone is running around screaming foul, the trees were trimmed també much. Sí, the precious homes of the monarchs were disturbed and it has riled the townspeople into a fury. What if the monarch’s don’t return?
no et preocupis, local filmmaker Bob Pacelli has a solution. Let’s just scatter as many eucalyptus trees as we can find into the grove to attract more butterflies.
In desperation, Pacelli came up with a plan: Find boxed trees — preferably blue gum eucalyptus — around 20 feet high and place them at strategic spots to help shelter the incoming monarchs. But the city has been slow to respond, Pacelli said. One official, Pacelli said, wrongly accused him of stepping on a butterfly, a violation of city code. No charges were filed.
For those paying attention, si, the city council of Pacific Grove has a law on the books that imposes a fine of $1,000 on anyone who molests a butterfly. Good things monarchs don’t roost in catholic churches.

I can imagine that it won’t take long for someone to point out exactly what’s wrong with these stories (hint, hi ha 2 things).

Pictured is a black-veined white (Aporia crataegi ssp), and it is currently being returned to the Korean Institute of Biological Resources. Loans get returned, as they should be, every day – and can even number in the thousands of specimens. I myself have a few hundred moths out on loan from a handful of museums that are pending research. As soon as I finish my work (or request an extension), the specimens are promptly returned accompanying my paper. Unfortunately it is not a rare occurrence where loans have gone out, and remained out without permission, for decades. At least in one case to my knowledge (names and institutions redacted) the loaned specimens were out so long they created a small international incident. Foreign ambassadors had to formally request the specimens, which had to be presented in person by our ambassador to their country.
This butterfly, però, I don’t believe was part of a loan. So why is it going back to Korea?

Em vaig ensopegar (no a ensopegar) aquestes imatges SEM de colors a la Pàgina web del telègraf avui. M'encanta especialment aquesta imatge d'una larva de Calliphoridae (Protoformia sp.) això sembla més d'una pel·lícula de ciència-ficció amb classificació C que de la natura. Em recorda tant a un personatge estrany de Star Wars com a un Muppet alhora. La sortida brusca de l'arquitectura estàndard del cos dels mamífers fa que els insectes siguin candidats principals per als extraterrestres d'un altre món. Els insectes s'han d'haver utilitzat com a guia per a pel·lícules com Districte 9, Starship Troopers, Alienígena, Galaxy Quest… només per citar-ne alguns recents. Estic segur que l'altre, més ben acreditats, Els frikis de ciència-ficció poden pensar en exemples encara millors. En la mateixa línia, recordo aquestes imatges que vaig fer d'un escarabat Cerambycidae a continuació – Moneilema gigues. Això va ser en els primers dies de la meva nova càmera, així que no puc mirar-los enrere com a fotos perfectes.

Aquí és un home pujol-topping zeliacon Papilio, o anís Swallowtail. Aquesta papallona s'ha generalitzat en els estats del Pacífic occidental i és probablement molt més comú del que era. Després de la introducció de fonoll (Foeniculum vulgare), i posterior fuita de l'horticultura, Swallowtail anís prendre com una papallona comuna Califòrnia. Potser abans d'aquesta planta va superar les nostres vores de les carreteres dels zelicaon poden haver estat restringit als contraforts de la Serra, ara vostè ho pot trobar a través de jardins a tot Califòrnia. Tot A, les coses semblen estar retrocedint a si mateixos en el sud de Califòrnia, on aquesta papallona està desapareixent de les zones urbanes. Recent introducció de l'arna gitana a les àrees Ventura / L'ha iniciat règims fumigació amb insecticida – per no parlar de l'aparició d'un Tachinidae parasitària invasiu que estima Leps més grans. Ja a la costa est aquesta mosca parasitària i polvorització pesada ha extirpat l'arna imperial (Eacles imperialista) de gran part del seu rang, deixant-lo en perill a la major part de Nova Anglaterra.
