Apparemment, my job is agiant waste of money. Funding that the California Academy of Sciences (my employer) has received, is coming under direct attack. D'accord, myposition has nothing to do with Antweb and I am not supported by public funds – but some of my colleagues are. Colleagues that have the exact same job title as my own, work a few doors down, and happen to work on different projects funded from different sources. What this boils down to is not only a republican war on science (go find that book), but a republican war on intellectualism. Everyone whose scaly little hand has crafted this report is not only willfully ignorant but is being outright dishonest. What is their unstated major premise here? UNE) Democrats are wasting money because we are not in power.
B) By pointing out where this money is being “wasted” we will help save it and in turn ingratiate ourselves to the voters.
B) Supporting science (par exemple. wasteful spending) is the cause of our economic problems.

Here are a few more images from my recent northern road trip, this time from western Idaho. Right outside the town of New Meadows were fields of flowers thick with life. It was some of the best day collecting I’ve done in years, and fellow road tripper Peter Jump and I discovered this population ofAdela flammeusella. This represents a likely state record for Idaho and possibly the eastern most population known for this species. They are supposedly associated with Owl’s Clover (some now reassigned toCastilleja), but I don’t recall ever seeing any at this location. I usually notice this plant whenever I’m in the field because it is the host to a handful of other interesting leps.
One frustrating character of the genus Adela is the homogeneity of the genitalia. For any entomologist out there it is par for the course to use the morphology of genitalia as a plethora of characters most useful in species identification. Microleps are often most easily differentiated through dissection, and a few groups must be dissected to even get to genus! But even strikingly different Adela are almost identical internally. À la place, a leg will go off to get DNA barcoded. Chances are it’s nothing too interesting, but stranger things have been known to happen. At the very least it will be informative to know what the genetic divergence might be across the range of the species.
Dans l'est du comté de Lassen, sur les vastes collines haut de genièvre de la frontière entre la Californie et le Nevada, il ya des troupeaux de “sauvage” chevaux, ovins et les bovins. Par du terrain, la seule plante à fleurs autour était marrube (Marrube blanc). Malgré la flore non indigènes et (demi)méga-faune, les insectes étaient encore à la maison. Étant la seule source de nectar, les petites touffes de plantes envahissantes ont été emballés avec soif Lycaenidae. Dans tout ce que je compensés 6 différentes espèces et obtenu quelques coups décents de 3. Il semble que je prends beaucoup de photos de papillon pour un collectionneur de papillon…mais il est difficile de laisser passer un tel groupe charismatique.
Mais la réflexion de ces chevaux (ah OK, “mustangs”) m'a donné une bonne idée. Oui, chevaux faisaient autrefois partie de la faune américains préhistoriques jusqu'à environ 12,000 il y a des années. Alors que la famille de cheval peut avoir évolué sur les plaines américaines, ils ont été longtemps absent. Réintroduction de chevaux par les Espagnols a planté les graines qui allaient devenir un aliment de base de la culture américaine. Voilà pourquoi aujourd'hui, des millions de dollars et des dizaines de milliers de chevaux sauvages à l'état sauvage en Californie, NV et Utah. Encore moins populaires sont les abattages annuels peu clandestins qui doivent être strictement appliquées pour garder ces grands troupeaux en bonne santé. Ma solution: réintroduire lions. Amérique était autrefois la demeure du lion en Amérique du Nord (Panthera leo atrox), qui se tenait un énorme 25% plus grand que le lion d'Afrique et a été le plus grand chat à avoir jamais vécu. Ceux-ci doivent avoir festoyé à cheval tacos et à son tour maintenu les populations stables. Et puisque nos chevaux sauvages sont de dissidence arabe, nous pouvons ainsi présenter le lion asiatique extrêmement menacées (Panthera leo persica), qui sera bien adapté à la fête sur ses frères persans. Si nous conservons “sauvage” chevaux, nous pourrions aussi bien faire les choses (plus, Je serais beaucoup plus intéressés à voir les chevaux si je pouvais voir des lions trop).
I’m not too sure if I’m sold on this theme. I’ve been shopping around for a new look, and am giving “twenty ten” a try. Let me know your opinion – whether or not you think it is better than the previous layout “misty”, or if there is another design you love. Be extra critical (especially since I had zero to do with these pre-fab designs).
Bien – didn’t like the new theme all that much, went back to the tried and true misty. I can always hope for a future one that fits this page a bit better though.

Il ya quelques mois, je étais sur la collecte en ouest de l'Arizona et a échoué à suivre à travers avec des images ou des mises à jour sur ce voyage. Bien, ce fut un succès et vaut bien les miles pour y arriver! I was searching for a Crambid moth in the mountains of theKofa National Wildlife Refuge (special thanks to the Kofa staff for quickly approving my permits). While I’m still sorting through moths from that trip, the timing couldn’t have been better weather wise. It was mild out (mid 90’s is almost cool for that region!) and still wet. As you can see below, there were plenty of moths that night. Here are a few images from the trip… now to catch up with my latest photos!

Je suis de retour de la route avec des milliers de spécimens, un peu las et prêt à s'asseoir encore un peu. Dans l'ensemble ce fut un merveilleux voyage – mais j'ai beaucoup, beaucoup de traitement à faire. Pendant que je joue rattrapage, profiter de ce clip. Pour autant que je sache, il n'y a pas de relation directe. Mais la piscine Grinter est un petit et il semble qu'il devrait être quelque part sur mon arbre. Tout ce que je peux dire, c'est que j'espère que après je suis parti il ya des fantômes de mes employés lugubres qui hantent ma maison, haletant derrière visiteurs (vraiment? c'est le dernier tour de fantôme?). Je m'attends aussi un documentaire avec un gars qui essaye vraiment difficile de paraître effrayant – il devrait être dans mon testament.
Over the next week and a half I’ll be driving up to Washington state for the annuallépidoptères’ réunion de la société. Il est situé dans la ville touristique piège de Leavenworth, qui est un “Thème bavaroises” diorama de boutiques de cartes postales et de boucher. Bien que je ne peux jamais tout à fait comprendre l'attrait des villes à thème, it is something Americans just love. Zut, I lived in Solvang for two years (au-dessous), so Leavenworth will be a nostalgic remembrance.
