Funding that the California Academy of Sciences (my employer) has received, is coming under direct attack. બરાબર, myposition has nothing to do with Antweb and I am not supported by public funds – but some of my colleagues are. Colleagues that have the exact same job title as my own, work a few doors down, and happen to work on different projects funded from different sources. What this boils down to is not only a republican war on science (go find that book), but a republican war on intellectualism. Everyone whose scaly little hand has crafted this report is not only willfully ignorant but is being outright dishonest. What is their unstated major premise here? The logical fallacy runs somewhere along the line of…

બી) By pointing out where this money is being “wasted” we will help save it and in turn ingratiate ourselves to the voters.
બી) Supporting science (દા.ત.. wasteful spending) is the cause of our economic problems.
Fresh off the desk of the Nature News is a feature pondering a world without mosquitos (or -toes). How is this news? Perhaps there is some new vector control we all need to hear about! કૂવો, check out the article from the latest edition of Nature titled “A World Without Mosquitoes“. I originally came across this onPZ Myers blogand started to write a comment… which started to grow exponentially so I decided to blog about it instead.

મારી તાજેતરની ઉત્તરીય માર્ગ સફરની કેટલીક વધુ છબીઓ અહીં છે, આ વખતે પશ્ચિમ ઇડાહોથી. ન્યુ મીડોઝ શહેરની બહાર જીવનથી ભરપૂર ફૂલોના ખેતરો હતા. મેં વર્ષોમાં કરેલો તે શ્રેષ્ઠ દિવસ હતો, અને સાથી રોડ ટ્રિપર પીટર જમ્પ અને મેં આ વસ્તીની શોધ કરી એડેલા ફ્લેમ્યુસેલા. આ ઇડાહો અને સંભવતઃ આ પ્રજાતિ માટે જાણીતી પૂર્વીય સૌથી વધુ વસ્તી માટે સંભવિત રાજ્ય રેકોર્ડનું પ્રતિનિધિત્વ કરે છે. તેઓ કથિત રીતે ઘુવડના ક્લોવર સાથે સંકળાયેલા છે (કેટલાકને હવે ફરીથી સોંપવામાં આવ્યા છે કાસ્ટિલેજા), પરંતુ મને યાદ નથી કે આ સ્થાન પર ક્યારેય કોઈ જોયું હોય. જ્યારે પણ હું ખેતરમાં હોઉં ત્યારે સામાન્ય રીતે આ છોડને જોઉં છું કારણ કે તે મુઠ્ઠીભર અન્ય રસપ્રદ લેપ્સનું યજમાન છે.
અછડતી Adela પૈકી એક નિરાશાજનક પાત્ર જનનાંગો ની એકરૂપતા છે. કોર્સ પ્રજાતિઓ ઓળખ સૌથી ઉપયોગી અક્ષરો સારી તરીકે જનનેન્દ્રિયો ના મોર્ફોલોજી ઉપયોગ કરવા માટે ત્યાં બહાર કોઇ કીટજ્ઞ માટે તેનો પાર છે. Microleps ભાગે સૌથી સરળતાથી ડિસેક્શન દ્વારા અલગ કરવામાં આવે, અને થોડા જૂથો પણ જીનસ મેળવવા છેદાયેલા હોવું જ જોઈએ! પણ strikingly વિવિધ Adela આંતરિક લગભગ સમાન હોય છે. તેના બદલે, એક પગ ડીએનએ બારકોડ કરો બંધ જશે. ચાન્સીસ તે ખૂબ જ રસપ્રદ કંઇ છે છે, પરંતુ અજાણી વસ્તુઓ થાય માટે જાણીતા છે. ખૂબ જ ઓછામાં ઓછા તે આનુવંશિક વળાંક આ પ્રજાતિઓ શ્રેણી સમગ્ર હોઇ શકે તે જાણવા માહિતીપ્રદ હશે.
પૂર્વીય લાસેન કાઉન્ટીમાં, કેલિફોર્નિયા-નેવાડા સરહદની વિશાળ ઊંચી જ્યુનિપર ટેકરીઓ પર, ના ટોળાઓ છે “જંગલી” ઘોડા, ઘેટાં અને ઢોર. કોર્સ માટે પાર, આજુબાજુનો એકમાત્ર ફૂલોનો છોડ હોરહાઉન્ડ હતો (મેરુબિયમ વલ્ગારિસ). બિન-મૂળ વનસ્પતિ હોવા છતાં અને (અર્ધ)મેગા પ્રાણીસૃષ્ટિ, જંતુઓ હજુ પણ ઘરમાં હતા. એકમાત્ર અમૃત સ્ત્રોત છે, આક્રમણકારોના નાના ઝુંડ તરસ્યા લાયકેનીડેથી ભરેલા હતા. બધા માં હું netted 6 વિવિધ પ્રજાતિઓ અને કેટલાક યોગ્ય શોટ્સ મેળવ્યા 3. એવું લાગે છે કે હું શલભ કલેક્ટર માટે બટરફ્લાયના ઘણા ફોટા લઉં છું…પરંતુ આવા પ્રભાવશાળી જૂથને પસાર કરવું મુશ્કેલ છે.
પણ પેલા ઘોડાઓનો વિચાર (હેં બરાબર, “મસ્ટંગ્સ”) મને એક સરસ વિચાર આપ્યો છે. હા, ઘોડાઓ એક સમયે પ્રાગૈતિહાસિક અમેરિકન પ્રાણીસૃષ્ટિનો ભાગ હતા 12,000 ઘણાં વર્ષો પહેલા, ઘણાં વર્ષોથી. જ્યારે ઘોડા પરિવારનો વિકાસ અમેરિકન મેદાનો પર થયો હશે, તેઓ લાંબા સમયથી ગેરહાજર છે. સ્પેનિયાર્ડ્સ દ્વારા ઘોડાઓની પુનઃપ્રવૃત્તિએ બીજ રોપ્યા જે અમેરિકન સંસ્કૃતિનો મુખ્ય ભાગ બનશે. તેથી જ આજે લાખો ડોલર અને હજારો જંગલી ઘોડાઓ CA માં જંગલી દોડે છે, NV અને ઉટાહ. આ મોટા ટોળાંઓને સ્વસ્થ રાખવા માટે અમુક અંશે ગુપ્ત વાર્ષિક કલ પણ ઓછા લોકપ્રિય છે જેનો કડકપણે અમલ કરવો જરૂરી છે.. મારો ઉકેલ: સિંહોને ફરીથી રજૂ કરો. અમેરિકા એક સમયે ઉત્તર અમેરિકન સિંહનું ઘર હતું (પેન્થેરા લીઓ એટ્રોક્સ), જે ભારે ઊભું હતું 25% આફ્રિકન સિંહ કરતાં મોટી અને અત્યાર સુધી જીવતી સૌથી મોટી બિલાડી હતી. તેઓએ ઘોડા-ટાકોસ પર મિજબાની કરી હશે અને બદલામાં વસ્તી સ્થિર રાખી હશે. અને અમારા જંગલી ઘોડાઓ અરબી અસંમતિના હોવાથી, અમે અત્યંત ભયંકર એશિયાટિક સિંહનો પરિચય પણ આપી શકીએ છીએ (પેન્થેરા લીઓ પર્સિકા), તે તેના પર્શિયન ભાઈઓ પર તહેવાર માટે સારી રીતે અનુકૂળ રહેશે. જો આપણે સંરક્ષણ કરીએ છીએ “જંગલી” ઘોડા, અમે પણ તે બરાબર કરી શકીએ છીએ (વધુ, જો મને સિંહ પણ જોવા મળે તો મને ઘોડા જોવામાં વધુ રસ હશે).
I’m not too sure if I’m sold on this theme. I’ve been shopping around for a new look, and am giving “twenty ten” a try. Let me know your opinion – whether or not you think it is better than the previous layout “misty”, or if there is another design you love. Be extra critical (especially since I had zero to do with these pre-fab designs).
કૂવો – didn’t like the new theme all that much, went back to the tried and true misty. I can always hope for a future one that fits this page a bit better though.

થોડા મહિના પહેલા હું પશ્ચિમી એરિઝોનામાં એકઠી બહાર હતો અને તે પ્રવાસે કોઈ પણ છબીઓ અથવા સુધારાઓ સાથે મારફતે અનુસરી કરવામાં નિષ્ફળ. કૂવો, તે માઇલ ત્યાં વિચાર સફળ અને સારી વર્થ હતી! I was searching for a Crambid moth in the mountains of theKofa National Wildlife Refuge (special thanks to the Kofa staff for quickly approving my permits). While I’m still sorting through moths from that trip, the timing couldn’t have been better weather wise. It was mild out (mid 90’s is almost cool for that region!) and still wet. As you can see below, there were plenty of moths that night. Here are a few images from the trip… now to catch up with my latest photos!

હું હજારો નમૂનાઓ સાથે રસ્તા પરથી પાછો આવ્યો છું, થોડો કંટાળો અને થોડીવાર બેસી રહેવા માટે તૈયાર. એકંદરે તે એક અદ્ભુત સફર હતી – પરંતુ મારી પાસે ઘણી બધી પ્રક્રિયાઓ છે. જ્યારે હું કેચ-અપ રમું છું, આ ક્લિપનો આનંદ લો. જ્યા સુધી મને ખબર છે, કોઈ સીધો સંબંધ નથી. પરંતુ Grinter પૂલ એક નાનો છે અને એવું લાગે છે કે તે મારા ઝાડ પર ક્યાંક હોવો જોઈએ. હું ફક્ત એટલું જ કહી શકું છું કે હું આશા રાખું છું કે હું ગયા પછી મારા વિલક્ષણ કર્મચારીઓના ભૂત મારા ઘરે ત્રાસી રહ્યા છે., મુલાકાતીઓ પાછળ ભારે શ્વાસ (ખરેખર? તે નવીનતમ ભૂત યુક્તિ છે?). હું પણ એક વ્યક્તિ પ્રયાસ કરી રહ્યા સાથે એક દસ્તાવેજી ફિલ્મની સંપૂર્ણ અપેક્ષા રાખું છું ખરેખર વિલક્ષણ અવાજ કરવો મુશ્કેલ – તે મારી છેલ્લી ઇચ્છા અને વસિયતનામામાં હોવું જોઈએ.
