A partir de uma hortelã Pericopinae. Eu gravei este vídeo no local, no norte da Costa Rica, há alguns anos. Quando me abaixei para pegar esta mariposa, era difícil deixar de notar o comportamento. A mariposa, Chetone angulosa (Erebidae: Pericopina) ((costumava ser Arctiidae)), tem um mecanismo de defesa comum para este grupo – eles excretam hemolinfa para dissuadir possíveis atacantes. Muitas mariposas fazem isso, mas nunca tinha visto uma exibição tão espetacular. Se você ouvir com atenção, poderá ouvir o som sibilante enquanto o fluido é bombeado do corpo. O mais impressionante é como cheirava fortemente a hortelã-pimenta… forte o suficiente para que eu apenas tivesse que tentar. Infelizmente, não tinha o gosto anunciado. Embora não fosse insuportável, o efeito mais notável foi uma dormência abrupta que durou vários minutos. Coisa muito potente, e posso imaginar o efeito em um pequeno pássaro ou mamífero pode ser muito menos divertido.
Parece que os biólogos têm o hábito engraçado de experimentar seus assuntos. Recentemente, participei de uma palestra sobre herpetologia sobre sapos venenosos. Em uma ligeira tangente, você sabia que a coloração dessas rãs notoriamente aposemáticas NUNCA foi testada até recentemente? O fato de serem venenosos é bem conhecido, mas ninguém nunca teve tempo para ver se suas cores realmente se encaixam em um verdadeiro modelo aposemático, isso é – eles realmente detêm predadores na selva? Acontece que não é surpreendente, sim, eles fazem. Mas é bom ter dados quantificados para apoiar esta afirmação tão sustentada. Voltar para degustação – um teste herper bem conhecido é dar uma lambida no sapo ou rã. Embora isso possa realmente ajudar a identificar as espécies de herp, mais provavelmente parece ser um efeito colateral divertido de muitas horas no campo. Não sendo um pastor, não me lembro do nome ou grupo ao qual isso se aplica; mas um famoso jornal foi a grandes profundidades para descrever os gostos, efeito potente e os perigos potenciais associados a cada espécie de sapo lambido (esta foi uma revisão taxonômica legítima).
O único exemplo de degustação útil em insetos em que posso pensar agora é para duas borboletas surpreendentemente semelhantes- Papilio thoas/cresphontes. Eu acredito que thoas tem um cheiro doce de flores quando você o pega fresco (sim, não um gosto… mas perto), no entanto, nunca vi isso publicado ou testei sozinho, então pode ser apócrifo. No entanto, é bem conhecido que muitas borboletas cheiram fortemente a sua planta hospedeira: tal como Speyeria coronis cheirando a Apocynum (forte odor vegetal). Muito espaço para investigações adicionais aqui. Mas sem dúvida, um biólogo usa todos os cinco sentidos sempre que pode.
Nos últimos quatro finais de semana agora eu fui em um ganso, por uma traça, Heliolonche é rápida. É um belo pequeno Noctuidae com asas anteriores rosadas e deslumbrantes hindwings vermelho-alaranjado. It isn’t very often encountered and only found along the northern California mountain ranges feeding onMalacothrix floccifera– uma flor endêmica CA. Every trip I have gotten skunked, until today – I collected two! As you may recall my first outing was about a month ago, no moth, but a beautiful series of specimens andphotographs of Adelamoths. The last few trips haven’t even come close to being as productive as the Adela one. So what to do when not finding your target? Get a sun burn and take some crummy photos.
Recently came across some ridiculouslyhorrible taxonomy from China (.pdf). If you scroll down a bit you can see the english translation. At first glance this looks like a standard taxonomy paper with bare-bones species descriptions. You might even think to yourself, “huh, wonder why they are describing species from only one specimen”. Not the end of the world, I’ve even done it myself. Está bem, to be fair, I had complete life histories and DNA to support those decisions. Here – they have neither. And, once you take a look at the specimen illustrations, something should become shockingly apparent. What do these specimens have in common (other than the poor image quality)?
to fake a UFO encounter? I recorded this video two years ago over the desert of Arizona. To confess, it made my heart skip a beat at first. I turned around and there were three glowing lights floating silently above me. I literally thought to myself “holy s#@% I don’t believe in this crap!”. The scale is really lost in the video, but they were huge and hovering under a high cloud cover. When the video zooms in you see a small light on the ground for reference. Our brain, being so inclined, makes it appear as if these lights are linked together in a massive triangle.
I walked back to the car while keeping a careful eye out for cacti and rattlesnakes (I was photographing a mojave rattler at the time), and grabbed a pair of binoculars. With a decent magnification it was clear that these were flares. Now only could you see a flickering light on the clouds above, but long trails of smoke rising above them. As you followed the flares down they gradually winked out – only to reappear some distance away (another drop). This was then followed by a series of fighter jets flying extremely low over the desert. Basically, this is the exact same thing that caused the “lights over phoenix” flurry a few years ago.
Assim, I uploaded this video to Youtube and didn’t call it a UFO – just some mysterious lights. Will it be adopted as UFO proof? I sure hope so. Not only that, I hope it appears on some UFO documentary in the future. It’s not as “compelling” as other “OVNI” videos, but my Canon point-and-shoot camera could only do so well.
While extra-terrestrials likely exist, there is absolutely zero compelling evidence to suggest they have visited us – and thanks to the laws of Physics, it is probable that they will never be able to visit regardless of how technologically advanced they become.
Precisamos ser conservacionistas para ter certeza, preservar áreas úmidas, florestas, espaços abertos e costas. Precisamos reduzir nosso lixo — lixo plástico e similares. Mas o que nós realmente precisamos é de grande, novas idéias: new ways to distribute and store energy for electric power, new ways to conserve and distribute clean water for farming and gulping, and new ways get ourselves and our cargo around, so that we don’t change the Earth’s climates too much as we burn our fossil fuels.

2009 Foi uma grande temporada. I explored tons of new land and collected at least 6 Novas espécies. Let’s hope for twice that many in the year to come.

“I am sending you pictures of a spider I possess that appears to be a Zoropsis spinimana. I need more information about this spider than is what is on the internet. Também, I do not know if this spider is male or female. I have had the spider for 2 semanas. It is still alive-but I am not sure what it eats. I have tried several things. If you are interested in this spider we can talk more-however, I get the feeling that this spider is not of real interest to your department. Please respond to me and examine the pictures.
