Unë mendoj se gjëja scariest në lidhje me këtë skandal abuzimi gjithë (scandalsssss) është se kisha në të vërtetë beson se kjo është puna e shejtanit – jo mendjet shtrembëruar të njerëzve individuale. Po, “the Devil is at work inside the Vatican”, so why punish a man who just needs the devil vanquished? Oh wait, they don’t even exorcise priests because it is just a “temptation” with young, deaf, boys. Then how is it that these priests who are so easily tempted left in positions of power? The answer is easy… just like any government, the Catholic church is profoundly incompetent.

Një tjetër kafshëve mahnitshme nga Hawaii – a completely amphibious caterpillar (botuar në mars 22 PNAS). Ndërsa ka një Lepidoptera disa ujore, të gjithë ata kanë gushë që i mbajnë ata të kufizuar në ujë (mendje ju, ne po flasim vetëm për fazën e larvave). Nëse uji i tyre thahet, kështu që nuk vemje. The novel adaptation in these insects is the ability to live comfortably, and apparently indefinitely, on dry land ose submerged in fresh water – a trait distinctive to these 12 new species of Hyposmocoma (Cosmopterigidae). This is unique not only to Insects, but to all known animals. Ka, sigurisht, amphibians. But unlike these caterpillars they require moisture to survive and often desiccate rapidly. Hyposmocoma thrive in desert like conditions, or submerged for weeks. Not only were 12 different species discovered (that are also the first known caterpillars to eat snails), but it even appears as if this amphibious ability has evolved three separate times. Clearly the selective pressures on small lepidoptera in these areas are extreme.
The Lepidoptera as a whole have evolved a full range of adaptations, including species that are parasitic, detritivorous, fungivorous, endophagous, carnivorous (also on Hawaii), aquatic and now fully amphibious. Hummm, sounds like a bad song (to this music). Clearly, leps are cooler than any other order.
Perhaps if I were Rubinoff I may have named one moth Hyposmocoma aquamana. Of course, Aquaman was pretty worthless on the land… so maybe it should have been H. potioaquamana (potio- coming from the Latin for superior or more effective).

Above is pictured Xanthothrix ranunculi f. albipuncta (Noctuidae: Stiriinae). It happens to be sitting on a beautiful california poppy. The hostplant, megjithatë, është Coreopsis stillmanii and grows in small patches of serpentine soils on southern facing slopes along the central valley. This moth was originally described as a form of X. ranunculi në 1925 (form roughly equals subspecies today), and then completely forgotten about and unseen until 1990. The monarchs have started their spring migration north and you might even see one soon (nuk emocionuese nëse jetoni në FL apo HI ku ka banorë vit-rrumbullakët, ose në CA ku ka pika të veçanta overwintering). A few bad storms in and along the butterfly’s route, coupled with habitat fragmentation and logging, has probably killed 50-60% of the mexican monarch population (according to reports below).

Is this anything special to be concerned about? I don’t particularly think so. Weather was the key player in this year’s record low population, and I can imagine the butterflies have seen numbers this bad before us humans were around to count them. I will bet anything on the population making a recovery in the years to come, no need to run around screaming, the monarch will be in your garden this summer and next.
Monarchs are pretty and kids love them, so it doesn’t take a stretch of the imagination to figure out why so much effort is put into monitoring them. But as a lepidopterist, nothing is as boring as yet another report on the “plight” of the monarchs Zzzzzzzzzzzz. I tend to believe there are more pressing issues to be concerned about, such as the accelerating rate of biodiversity loss in the face of scientific ignorance. Monarchs do play an important role as a public mascot and even as a figurehead species that help preserve precious habitat – but let’s use them as a foot in the door for further education. Po, the Monarch Butterfly Fund, is striving for habitat protection and sustainability. A good thing. I understand that this achieves a positive outcome, but why only in the name of the monarch? This seems like a spectacular opportunity for science education that is just rounded down to “save the monarch”. These forests serve as much more than a shelter to one butterfly species and even more than “an important carbon sink and oxygen generator”.

Instead I suggest this. It is by far, orders of magnitude, more interesting:

Nga Chris Grinter, më 13 mars, 2010 Sikur standardet arsimore të mos ishin mjaftueshëm të këqija në këtë vend, Teksasi ka vendosur për t'i bërë ato më keq. Një shtytje e kohëve të fundit nga një bord shkolle konservatore ka rishkruar historinë, fjalë për fjalë. Logjika mund të jetë pak e vështirë për t'u ndjekur, por ata janë përpjekur “ekuilibër” histori duke injektuar ideale më konservatore (mendje ju, askush nuk është historian në bord). Çfarë duhet ndryshuar:
- Shtimi i konfuzionit për ndarjen e kishës nga shteti – (po, ne e dimë se nuk është fjalë për fjalë në kushtetutë. Nuk do të thotë se nuk ekziston.)
- Duke diskutuar sesi idealet e krishtera ndihmuan në themelimin e vendit tonë.
- Ringjallja konservatore në vitet '80 dhe '90, duke përfshirë Shumicën Morale dhe NRA.
- Duke diskutuar natyrën e dhunshme të disa lëvizjeve për të drejtat civile dhe mbështetjen republikane të votave të Kongresit për të drejtat civile.
- Duke shtuar se janë internuar edhe gjermanë dhe italianë, jo vetëm japonezët gjatë Luftës së Dytë Botërore.
- Duke shtuar se si senatori McCarthy kishte të drejtë në të qenit paranojak ndaj komunizmit.
- Zëvendësimi i fjalës “kapitalizmit” me “sipërmarrje e tregut të lirë”.
- Heqja e Thomas Jefferson nga pjesët e librit.
I gjithë ky ndryshim është i kobshëm. Nuk e kam problem të përmend disa presidentë republikanë dhe rolin e tyre pozitiv në histori, apo roli i GOP. Historia mund të shkruhet nga fitimtarët, por duhet të përpiqet drejt drejt dhe të balancuar. Ndryshimet e bëra më sipër janë marrëzi absolute dhe shërbejnë vetëm për të çuar më tej konservatorin e tyre, fetare, rend dite. Ajo që me të vërtetë më zemëron është ndryshimi i lëvizjes për të drejtat civile dhe internimi japonez. Vetëm për shkak se një bandë e vjetër, yndyrë, burrat e bardhë në kongres e kuptuan se ata miratojnë më mirë ligje për të drejtat civile nuk do të thotë se ata duhet të meritojnë kredi për të. Dhe, a presin vërtet që ne të besojmë se internimi nuk ishte i fokusuar te japonezët? I gjithë ky kapitull në historinë tonë të SHBA-së është padyshim i tmerrshëm dhe i turpshëm, u ushqye edhe nga racizmi. Nuk e kuptoj se si mbështetja e fanatizmit dhe racizmit konsiderohet një vlerë konservatore. Pse duhet ata pa turp, dhe me injorancë, rishkruajnë historinë për të çuar përpara axhendën e tyre? Helmimi i republikanëve dhe vlerave konservatore nga feja është e gjitha për t'u sqaruar në këtë rast. Buka dhe gjalpi i fondamentalizmit fetar po ngulit rininë. Kjo strategji është shumë e suksesshme kur inkurajoni familjet e mëdha dhe përkushtimin e çmendur. Tani që shumica e konservatorëve janë fetarë, ata po tjerr rrjetat e tyre mbi fëmijët tanë (mirë, fëmijët e tu).
Më e keqja nuk ka ardhur ende. Teksasi dhe Kalifornia janë tregjet më të mëdha të teksteve shkollore në vend. Nëse miratojnë legjislacionin që detyron ndryshimin e teksteve, atëherë kompanitë botuese duhet të bien në përputhje. Meqenëse shtypja e versioneve të ndryshme të librave për shtete të ndryshme është financiarisht e pamundur, atëherë vetëm NJË libër shtypet për shkollat amerikane. Nëse Teksasi e shton me sukses këtë BS në librat e historisë, atëherë çdo shkollë publike në SHBA ushqehet me forcë (ose siç duan të thonë republikanët – na përplasi në fyt) Keto libra.
Çfarë është një konservator sot nëse jo fetar? Çfarë vjen më pas: futja e më shumë “i balancuar” idealet e ngrohjes globale, klonimi dhe biologjia evolucionare. Qëndroni të sintonizuar.
