Tacsanomaíochta Teip

Recently came across some ridiculously horrible taxonomy from China (.pdf). If you scroll down a bit you can see the english translation. At first glance this looks like a standard taxonomy paper with bare-bones species descriptions. You might even think to yourself, “huh, wonder why they are describing species from only one specimen”. New Technique Page!

I’ve just illustrated my method for spreading microlepidoptera, go explore the techniques page. Who is courageous enough to attempt it?

How I keep myself busy

I’ve been busy spreading microleps over the last few days, and here is a small selection from my summer collecting trips. Still have at least another 200 to go before catching up on my backlog. I am working on illustrating just how to spread these moths… mar sin fanacht tuned.

2009 was a great season. Mé . . . → Leigh Nios mo: How I keep myself busy

Genius of the Press V

So what is wrong with this illustration below? Sounds like a great show at the Krohn Conservatory in Cincinnati. This news story made me look just a little closer

Níos dlúithe, toirt I

Mé teacht trasna ar roinnt athscríbhinní r-phost ceisteanna a sheoladh isteach inár rannóg feithideolaíocht agus ní féidir liom resist roinnt leo. Geallaim go bhfuil na teachtaireachtaí (agus beidh) 100% fíor agus gan eagarthóireacht. Ainmneacha athraíodh nó a bhaint a chosaint ar an neamhchiontach. Táimid dóchasach, Beidh mé ag teacht ar fud na gach uair amháin ar feadh tamaill, agus . . . → Leigh Nios mo: Níos dlúithe, toirt I

Butterfly na seachtaine

I’ve been a bit remiss at posting regular challenges, so I’ll try to pick up the pace. Who can tell me anything about this butterfly? The most you’re getting is that it is from the Western half of the US. Credit for family, genus or species and ridiculous credit for subspecies and where it is . . . → Leigh Nios mo: Butterfly na seachtaine

Get a Life, Discovery

I sat rapt in front of my TV on Sunday watching the latest installment of the BBC/Discovery seriesLife”. The first thing that comes to my mind… “WHY was Oprah chosen to narrate!?” Ar ndóigh, I waited for the insects special to air before I blogged about this, but having to listen to Oprah for the . . . → Leigh Nios mo: Get a Life, Discovery

Moth tasting in Napa

It was a beautiful day today in the bay area, so I headed up to Napa and the Pope Valley. I was scouting some new territory for a small flower moth, Heliolonche celeris, that apparently is waiting for more contiguous nice weather to emerge. This season has been a bit tardy because of all of . . . → Leigh Nios mo: Moth tasting in Napa

Genius an Phreasa, i. IV

Another installment of Genius of the Press, and perhaps a bit of a softball. (Yikes these are easy to find) Who can tell me whats wrong with this article?

Is féidir liom tiomáint i bhfad ró

The clouds broke this afternoon in San Francisco and the sun began to shine. The upcoming warm weather induced an all too familiar feeling, one that I should be out collecting insects and not sitting indoors! While I have already been to a handful of places this spring, I have a long season of collecting . . . → Leigh Nios mo: Is féidir liom tiomáint i bhfad ró
